Fowler is scared to see a man standing in the room.Max who is tall and thin man and is holding an automatic pistol in his hand . He had entered his room by using a key to take the report concerning a new missile. Ausable ,sensing the danger, fabricated a story about the non-existent balcony which Max believed to be true.Ausable complained that it was due to the balcony that somebody had entered his room the second time. After sometime there was knocking at the door.Ausable again befooled Max by saying that it was the police who wanted to come inside to provide him protection. Max wanted to run away to avoid the police and jumps to his death into that non-existent balcony.

Summary of The Midnight Visitor
The Midnight Visitor by ROBERT ARTHUR is an engrossing story with very short plot but extremely entertaining one. The main character of the story is Ausable who is a secret agent. However, his physical appearance and joviality deceive everyone. It is hard for a new person to find out he is an accomplished secret agent.
As the story opens, we find him going with Fowler to his hotel room. Fowler is also interested to know many things from him, but Ausable keeps things hidden from him.
As Ausable opens the door to his room and switches on the light he finds Max standing in the room, pointing his pistol at him. Fowler fails to grasp the situation. Max demands some secret report about missiles from him. Ausable is very witty, he has already arranged with the waiter to bring him drinks. The waiter knocks at the door repeatedly; Max gets scared. Ausable takes advantage of Max’s fright. He tells him the police is knocking at the door. Max threatens Ausable to send the police from the door; he tries to hide himself in the balcony to which a window opens. As he tries to go into the balcony, Max falls to the ground as there was no balcony. Ausable had made Max believe there was balcony behind the window.
After Max’s fall, Ausable opens the door; and the waiter with drinks enters. Fowler is amazed at Ausable’s cleverness and smartness.
