Seas, lakes, and rivers often appear less deep than they really are for the following reasons:

  • Due to the process of refraction, the bottom of the water bodies seems nearer.
  • The light rays from the bottom of water bodies are bent away from the normal as they pass from water into the air which makes them appear shallower than they really are.
  • Therefore they are always deeper than we think.
