(sec^2 -1) = tan^2
So tan^2 ( 1 - cot^2)
tan^2 - 1
sin^2/cos^2 -1
sin^2 - cos^2)/ cos^2
As cos^2 - sin^2 = cos 2 theta
So -cos 2 theta sec^2 theta
So tan^2 ( 1 - cot^2)
tan^2 - 1
sin^2/cos^2 -1
sin^2 - cos^2)/ cos^2
As cos^2 - sin^2 = cos 2 theta
So -cos 2 theta sec^2 theta
