you might would have studied the identity,
sec²a= 1 + tan²a ( identity )
sec(a) = √(1+tan²a)
if you want the identity derivation too then,
tan²a + 1 = perpendicular²/ base² + 1
= p² / b² + b²/b²
= (p²+b²)/b²
= h² / b²
= (h/b)² which is equal to tan²a as tan(a) = h/b
thus, tan²a+1=sec²a
