Double fertilization takes place due to two sperm nuclei which contribute to the process of fertilization.
The male gametophyte having the pollen tube and pollen grain comprises of two sperm nuclei and one vegetative nucleus.
Double fertilization only occurs in angiosperm with an exception of gymnosperm genus Ephedra in which two sperm nuclei is produced among which one fuses with the egg nucleus.
