These consist of 12 Buddhist, 17 Hindu and 5 Jain caves, built in close proximity in the time frame starting from the 5th century CE to the 10th century CE during the rule of the Kalachuri, Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties.

The Caves of Vatapi and Dharapuri were constructed during Pulkeshi's reign. He was very fond of art and apart from these two caves, the art and painting on Ajanta Caves were also done during Pullkeshi period.
