noThe secondary cell wall, a thick layerformed inside the primary cell wallafter the cell is fully grown. It is not found in all cell types. Some cells, such as the conducting cells in xylem, possess a secondary wall containing lignin, which strengthens and waterproofs the wall.

The cell wall is microfibril based. The primary cell(Pcw) is formed after the middle lamella but the secondary cell wall(Scw) is formed after cell enlargement completion. The secondary cell wall is often layered S1, S2 and S3(outer, middle and inner layers, resp) which vary in microbifrils orientation.
