One day a small group of young
people, from a rehabilitation
centre!, were taken on
a field trip to Shambala. Tippi
Hendren, who takes care of
the centre, addressed the group.
She told them about Shambala,
how it came about, and a little
bit about the animals there.
She was near the cheetah
enclosure. Subira, a three-year-
old cheetah lay atop the large,
long, low branch of a massive
oak tree, observing them
quietly. She pointed to the
cheetah and said, 'Her name is
Subira; she is a three-year-old cheetah, Magnificent, isn't she?'
Just then, Subira turned her head and gazed at the crowd. The closely set black spots on her
tawny, thick fur were so dazzling that everyone felt compelled to comment, 'Oooh, look at her,
she is so beautiful!' Except one.
In the group was seventeen-year-old Cory

Cory lost more than a leg in the tragic

It left him not only physically disabled, but

he was bitter and felt just plain useless. Now he sat in a wheelchair, angry at the world. He made

only three legs!
No one was more stunned by the sight of this incredible animal running at full speed than Cory,
the angry young teenager. Looking bewildered' at the sight of this incredible animal running at
full speed, he asked the question that was on everyone's mind. 'How can she run that fast with
three legs?' He stared at the beautiful animal with the missing leg and he smiled, a spark of hope
evident in his eyes.
Tippi answered, 'As you have now all noticed, Subira is very special. Since no one told her she
shouldn't-or couldn't-run as fast as a cheetah with four legs, she doesn't know otherwise
And so, she can. We just love her. Subira is a living example, a symbol, of what Shambala is all
'Because,' Tippi responded, 'they thought, what good is a three-legged cheetah? They didn't
think the public would want to see a deformed cheetah. And since it was felt that she wouldn't
be able to run and act like a normal cheetah, she served no purpose
'That's when we heard about Subira, she continued,' and offered her sanctuary. It was soon after
