Given:

The ratio of children going for a picnic to the ratio of children not going is 8:3.

If the total number of children were 55  out of which 3 who were not going earlier are now ready to go.

To find:

The new ratio

Solution:

Let's assume,

"8x" → represent the no. of children going for a picnic

"3x" → represents the no. of children not going for a picnic

Total no. of children = 55

∴ 8x + 3x = 55

⇒ 11x = 55

⇒ x = \frac{55}{11}

x = 5 ..... (i)

We are given that 3 of them who were not going earlier are now going, so,

The no. of children going for a picnic now becomes = 8x + 3

and

The no. of children not going for a picnic now becomes = 3x - 3

Now,

The new ratio of children going for a picnic to the ratio of children not going becomes,

= \frac{8x\: +\:3}{3x \:-\: 3}

substituting the value of x from (i), we get

= \frac{(8\times 5)\: +\: 3}{(3\times 5)\:-\:3}

= \frac{40\: +\: 3}{15\:-\:3}

= \bold{\frac{43}{12}}option (d)

Thus, the new ratio is → \underline{\bold{\frac{43}{12} }}.
