SECTION 3. POETRY
Read the following extract and complete the activities.
Tansen, the singer, in great Akbar's Court
Great Akbar said; magic indeed is thine,
Won great renown, through the Badshahi Fort
Learnt at his feet. Then happy Tansen bowed
His voice rang like the sound of silver bells
And said,
Beyond the world's ignoble crowd,
And Akbar ravished heard. The story tells
Scoring its wealth, remote and far away
How the King praised him, gave him many a gem
He dwells within a cave of Himalay
Called him chief jewel in his diadem
Could I but see him once, desired the King,
One day the singer sang the Song of Fire,
Sit at his feet awhile, and listening
The Deepak Rag, and burning like a pyre
Hear his celestial song, I would deny
His body burst into consuming flame.
My state and walk in robes of poverty
To cure his burning heart a maiden came
Then said Tansen As you desire, Huzoor,
And sang Malhar, the song of water cold,
Indeed 'twere better as a slave and poor
Till health returned, and comfort as of old.
To come; for he, lifted above the things
Mighty thy Teacher must be and divine,
Of earth, disdains to sing to earthly kings.
