Air pollution is a serious problem in many of the world's large cities. Air pollution occurs when wastes
dirty the air. Most of the air pollution is caused by artificially created wastes in the form of gases and tiny
particles of liquid and solid matter. The four principal sources of air pollutants are transportation, fuel
combustion, industrial processes and solid waste disposal. Natural pollutants include dust, pollen and soit
particles. Forms for transportation, such as aeroplanes, cars, ships and trains are leading sources of air
pollution. Exhaust from engines contain various kinds of harmful pollutants, viz Carbon Monoxide and
nitrogen oxides.
Fuel combustion in homes, factories and office building s give off nitrogen oxides, particulates and
sulphur oxides. Industrial processes contribute significantly to air pollution. Industries give off various
types of pollutants e.g. factories that produce aluminium expel fluoride dust. Oil refineries discharge
ammonia, hydrocarbons, organic acids and sulphur oxides into the atmosphere.
Burning of solid waste i.e. burning of dead leaves and refuse creates a very visible form of air pollution-
thick black smoke.
Other sources of air pollution include chemical sprays, forest fires, burning of forests, bush and grass
and
structural fires.
