One day, Akbar thought of an idea to confuse Birbal. He handed his ring over to
one of his courtiers and asked him to keep quiet.
When Birbal came to the court, the Emperor told him, 'Birbal, a terrible thing has
happened today. I have lost the ring my father gave me. ?
Needless to say, Birbal was worried. 'Where did you lose it, your Majesty? Where
were you?'
'Right here,' the emperor answered promptly.
... then, it must be here!' said Birbal to himself.
He prepared to meditate as he closed his eyes and remained still for some time.
There was complete silence while he 'meditated'.
After sometime, he opened his eyes and said, “The ring is in this place: You shall
have it in a little while...' and with this, he started to look around for someone.
'Who are you looking for?' the emperor asked of him.
"Sire, when I was meditating, a voice told me to look for a man with a straw in
his beard,' he informed the emperor.
As soon as he uttered these words, his sharp eyes saw one of the courtiers
stroking his beard. Birbal went up to the courtier and asked the ring back.
Akbar was very pleased with him and the courtiers had to agree that Birbal was a
cut above everyone
