(20 MARKS)
1. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow.
(i) The fresh air, which one used to breath six or seven decades ago, is altogether missing today. It is now
badly polluted due to various reasons, mostly human-made ones. Air is the first and foremost need for
human survival, without which man's existence cannot be deemed possible. The moment an infant comes to
this world, it is the air that he breathes first to start his life journey. So, fresh air is essential for the healthy
survival of man, in its absence, slow annihilation of the human race is inevitable.
(ii) Fumes of automobile and toxic smoke belching out of the factories are two major causes behind air
pollution. It worsens every day with a constant increase in the number of automobiles on the roads and
factories in the residential areas. The fumes and smoke emitted keep polluting the atmosphere. Deforestation
around urban areas is another serious reason behind the rise in air pollution. It is green vegetation that is
necessary for air purification and maintaining the ecological balance. The foul smell emanating from huge
piles of rubbish, lying open, also pollute the air which we breath in. The pollutants responsible for air pollution
give rise to the "Greenhouse Effect" and also leads to the depletion of the ozone layer in the atmosphere.
(ili) It has hence, become utmost important to check the pollution of air which is worsening with each passing
day. People should be made conscious of its danger. Not one nation alone, but all affected nations should
devise effective ways to curb this menace cohesively. If not paid an urgent heed, the day is not far off when
there will be a question mark on human survival.
