11. The excavationsof the ruins of Harappa showed the remarkable skill of its inhabitants in town planning and organization. The city was divided into two parts- a smaller citadel area covering the western part and a larger residential area to the east. The essential institutions of civic life and places for public rituals were generally located in the citadel area which had defense walls and bastions with elaborate entrances around it. The main streets and roads were set in line, sometimes running straight for a mile, and varing in width from 4 metres to 10 metres. Most of these roads and streets were paved with fire-burnt bricks.

12. The religious philosophy of Buddhism is contained in the first sermon of Buddha which he gave at Sarnath, near Varanasi. His teachings were simple. He preached in Pali, the language of the common people. The essence of his teachings are contained in the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
