Given:

Numbers which are to be divided are 201 and 671, leaves remainders 6 and 8 respectively.

To find:

Find the greatest number which will divide 201 and 671 leaving remainders 6 and 8 respectively.

Solution:

Let us assume that the greatest number which divides be x

If dividing 201 by x leaves a remainder 6.

Then (201 - 6) = 195 will be completely divisible by x.

Similarly, if dividing 671 by x leaves a remainder 8

Then (671 - 8) = 663 will be completely divisible by x.

So, x is the greatest divisor of both 195 and 663 which means x is the HCF of 195 and 663.

195 = 3 × 5 × 13

663 = 3 × 5 × 17

HCF = 3 × 5

HCF = 15

So, the greatest number which will divide 201 and 671 leaving remainders 6 and 8 respectively is 15.
