Secularism is a belief system that rejects religion, or the belief that religion should not be part of the affairs of the state or part of public education. The principles of separation of church and state and of keeping religion out of the public school system are an example of secularism.Secular things are not religious. Anything not affiliated with a church or faith can be called secular. Non-religious people can be called atheists or agnostics, but to describe things, activities, or attitudes that have nothing to do with religion, you can use the word secular. So to be secular means that 1) a person does not believe in supernatural beings, entities, or realms, 2) a person does not engage in religious behaviors, and 3) a person does not identify as religious and is not a member of a religious community.

According to the Constitution , the key elements of secularism in India are as follows :-

1. All religions are equal before law .

2. The Indian State does not have an official religion . This can be interpreted that India is a non religious State , and that all religions are equal. This means that government buildings like courts , police stations,  government offices and government schools cannot display or promote any one religion.

Secondly , in order to respect the sentiments of all religions and to uphold the interest of certain sections of the society , the Indian government does make certain exceptions and intervene in some religious practices.
