India has people of different religions, they have respect to their religion but they have equal respect to the country. They live in the same land with any religious fights or discriminations. Thus, India is a secular country.

Heyya!
Indian Secularism is based on the principle of Equal respect for all religions, where State respects every religious community and their sentiments. The principle of Secularism forms the bedrock of our democratic society as it:
a. Indian state does not establish any religion as a state religion. Indian secularism practises an attitude of a principled and equal distance from all religions.
b. It grantees right to freedom of religion to all. Everybody is allowed freely profess, propagate preach religion of his/her choice.
c. The state does not favour any particular religion, nor it promotes any particular religion. There shall not be any religious instruction being imparted in government educational institutions.
It is necessary to have Secularism in India because:
a. India is a multi religious country, the principle of Secularism, through right to religion allows people freedom of faith and practise. Our political leadership acknowledged the presence of religious minorities in India and also to grant rights to them so as to strength our democratic polity. Declaring India to be a secular country would allow everyone to freely, profess, propagate religion of their choice and this would thus, form the bedrock of our democratic system.
b. India, after partition had a considerable amount of Muslim minority who needed to be accommodated. It was imperative to grant rights and recognition to them in order to strengthen our democratic system.
c.By not declaring India a theocratic state, our leadership minimised the chances of conflict in the society, as the principle of secularism would ensure peace and stability.
d. To give recognition to diverse religious interests.
