In last few years a wrong perception is being created in the minds of people by right wing fanatics that our country shouldn’t have been secular and secularism has caused a great damage to Hindu religion and all. These are just myths created by crooked upper class society to capture power by exhibiting them as a great saviors of religion. But in India no religion has been attacked and everyone has been flourishing since independence.
You all are aware that unfortunately in 1947 our country India got divided into two based on religion. For this I would say the power hungry politics were solely responsible. At last India got divided and new nation Pakistan was born from partition. Pakistan became Islamic Republic where Islam became state religion. At that time here in India some fanatics and fundamentalists people who belong to majority community argued that Hinduism should become state religion of India. But our forefathers who gave us the best constitution in the world were men great intellectual capability and knowledge. They were fully aware of the obstacles which would come if India becomes religious state because religion is beautiful only if it is kept separate from state and government. If religion mixes with state and government it will become a poison which would destroy the whole country. Thus our forefathers didn’t adopt any state religion and gave us a constitution. They realized the importance of secularism even though they didn’t add it in the preamble.
Many people especially from the right wing groups argue that our country was not secular and the word secularism was added in preamble by a constitutional amendment in 1975. I totally agree with them but they are failing to understand that our constitution was fundamentally secular even before addition of that word that is why it guarantees freedom of religion and right to equality. We must not forget that Pakistan which was divided on religious lines broke in two parts within 40 years and new nation Bangladesh emerged with the principle of secularism.
Dear friends secularism is very important for India because if India becomes religious state it will stop us from sharing new thoughts and reading about different religions and we’ll loose our analyzing capability and scientific outlook and politics will be hijacked by clerical class which is very dangerous for any nation because clergy will damage the nation by their fanatical actions and spreading hate against each other. So it is very important to keep religion separate from state.
