Secularism means absence of religion. Accordingly, India does not
have any state religion, it is not a theocratic state. It is a paradox that
the country that gave birth to and propagated some religions across
its boundaries is without a religion. How can a country that has
achieved the highest level of religious and spiritual achievements
be without a religion?
In fact, there are two versions of secularism: negative secularism
and positive secularism. The former negates religion, it never talks
about religion: religion is immaterial so far as the government if
concerned. The latter accepts religion as a living force, it helps
religions to any religion. India believes in the concept of 'sarva
dharma sama bhava' (equal feeling for all the religions). It is this
under-current of Indian concept of religion flowing since ages which
is the soul of Indian Secularism.
