Explanation:

The concern over ineffective management of forest reserves in different states of Nigeria has taken a different dimension considering the fact that they are now used as hideouts by miscreants who unleash attacks on unsuspecting members of the society as well as public and private properties. This paper discussed the status of our forest reserves since the last five to seven years, and x-rayed different forest management challenges that have led to the recent takeover of the nation’s forest reserves, spread across various ecological zones, by miscreants. It identified inadequate manpower, lack of release of appropriated funds, non implementation of forest management plan, unclear tenure and property right, as the major factors responsible for improper management of our forest reserves, and also considered the concomitant socio-economic and environmental issues. Joint Forest Management with surrounding communities, intensified efforts at environmental education, total and timely release of appropriated funds for the management of forest reserves and other protected areas, by respective governments, were recommended, in order to minimize the negative impacts associated with the use of the nation’s forests by miscreants, and to ensure that they play their productive roles and also maintain their ecological processes and functions.
