Heya User ...

 \frac{1}{3 +  \sqrt{5} } =  \frac{1}{3 +  \sqrt{5} }  \frac{ 3 -  \sqrt{5} }{ 3 -  \sqrt{5}} \\
=  \frac{ { 3 -  \sqrt{5} }}{4}

'.' 1/4 is a rational, the rationalizing factor , i.e, the factor which when multiplied with the given no. would rationalize it .... is ( 3 - √5 ) √√

Hope it  helps ^_^
