Seeds were kept in 5 containers to germinate. Each container contained 100 seeds. After 20 days the germinated seeds were counted and the results were recorded as shown below:

Container Number

1

2

3

4

5

       Number of germinated Seeds

83

72

90

76

84

If a container is selected at random from then, find the probability of finding

(i) less than 70 germinated seeds

(ii) more than 72 germinated seeds

(iii) more than 70 germinated seeds

(iv) at least 83 germinated seeds

SOLUTION

TO DETERMINE

If a container is selected at random from then, find the probability of finding

(i) less than 70 germinated seeds

(ii) more than 72 germinated seeds

(iii) more than 70 germinated seeds

(iv) at least 83 germinated seeds

EVALUATION

Here the total number of containers = 5

So total number of possible outcomes = 5

(i) Let A be the event that of finding less than 70 germinated seeds

Number of favourable cases for the event A = 0

Hence the required probability

= P(A)

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{0}{5} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  0}

(ii) Let B be the event that of finding more than 72 germinated seeds

Number of favourable cases for the event B = 4

Hence the required probability

= P(B)

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{4}{5} }

(iii) Let C be the event that of finding more than 70 germinated seeds

Number of favourable cases for the event C = 5

Hence the required probability

= P(C)

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{5}{5} }

 \displaystyle \sf{ = 1 }

(iv) Let D be the event that of finding at least 83 germinated seeds

Number of favourable cases for the event D = 3

Hence the required probability

= P(D)

 \displaystyle \sf{ =  \frac{3}{5} }
