Eugene Field was an American poet that had a rough start. He dropped out of a few colleges and tried acting. He ended up traveling to Europe, but returned poor. He wrote many poems and works, but one of his most famous works is Wynken, Blynken, and Nod. The poem was published in 1889, four years after his death at age 45. The original title of the work is Dutch Lullaby. The poem is essentially a short story in poetry form. The story is about 3 children going on an adventure during the night, "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night sailed off in a wooden shoe...” (Field) The poem describes the sights they see and the things they encounter. At one point they talk to the moon and fish for herring in the sea. The poem is very whimsical in style and very lighthearted. This is a very popular poem that is used in movies with children and the text has been used in multiple musical compositions. As if the poem could get any better, it has an ending that ties it all together and makes it whole. In the end the words state that "Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes, and nod is a little head." (Field) It goes on to explain the rest of the story as a small child in his bed preparing to go to sleep. What a wonderfully serene piece!

Eugene Field was an extremely talented poet and this piece surely shows it. The poem itself is almost musical in form, it flows very well. The poem has its own rhythm that you can't help but read it with an internal beat. His use of rhyme is what makes the piece. He rhymes every other phrase, example: "The old moon laughed and sang a song, as they rocked in the wooden shoe, and the wind that sped them all night long ruffled the waves of dew."(Field) This is very characteristic of Field's style of writing. He uses a more rhythmic and rhyme style to most of his pieces. He is very good at it too, if I might add; I have a hard time rhyming a few lines, let alone a whole poem.

I also really like the use of reoccurring themes. At the end of every verse he adds "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod." I feel that by adding this he sort of ties the current verse into the rest of the story, it is kind of a way of providing closure to each thought. I really like his use of words. The words are not harsh and portray a nice scene, to me the words seem round and roll off of the tongue very nicely. The original name of the poem was "Dutch Lullaby", which makes sense that the children sail off in a wooden shoe and are fishing for herring. Field stays true to his theme of it being a Dutch lullaby. His use of language would be very nice for a child to hear. The child would be able to understand most of it and be able to create a picture in their mind. I love to think in the mind of a child because it is so innocent and unsure of the world. I believe that keeping this youth helps us understand children so much better, because we all used to be children at one time.
