The Third Estate would become a very important early part of the French Revolution. ... But the dramatic inequality in voting—the Third Estate represented more people, but only had the same voting power as the clergy or the nobility—led to theThird Estate demanding more voting power, and as things developed, more rights.

On 5 may 1789 Louis 16 called an assembly of the estastes general for the proposal of new taxes. In the assembly voting had been conducted on the principle of one estate one vote. But the members of the 3 estate demanded voting now to be conducted on the principle of one person one vote which was rejected by the king and becamethe cause for the french revolution.
