Explanation:

A Face in the Dark by Ruskin Bond narrates an incident that revolves around Mr. Oliver, an Anglo-Indian teacher who taught in an English school in Shimla. He often went to Shimla which was a few kilometres away and return by evening. One day while he was returning from Shimla, it was late in the evening and he decided to take a short cut through the pine forests. He carried his torch along and moved briskly. When he was at a short distance from his school, he saw a boy sitting with his head held between his hands and sobbing silently. He asked the boy why he was sitting out there as it was not allowed for the boys to move out of the school. The boy said nothing, still sobbing strangely. Mr. Oliver asked him to lift his face up and when the boy lifted his face up, what Mr. Oliver saw, he was terrified and he started running towards his school. When he saw the watchman with his lantern, he asked him why he was running. Mr. Oliver told him that he saw a boy who had no face, i.e., no eyes, ears, or any other feature on his face. The watchman asked him if the boy’s face looked like it, and he raised the lantern up to his face. Mr. Oliver saw his face, no eyes, no ears and no features. At that moment the wind blew and put the lamp out. I really like the story because it is full of adventure and horror. The author Ruskin Bond has woven this story so horrifically that the reader becomes surprised after reading the story.

The Thief's Story (Ruskin Bond)

The Thief's Story, by Ruskin Bond, revolves around the two remarkable characters - Anil and Hari Singh (though it was a pseudonym).

In the beginning of the story, 15-year-old Hari approaches 25-year-old Anil with the wish to work under him. His (Hari's) approach is quite dramatic since both of them are thin, but they both flatter each other identifying the obverse as a 'wrestler'.

However the story is not all about fun. It raises concerns for the backwards. Anil agrees to hire Hari but with no pay, since he (Anil) himself has no money.

The main protagonist is Anil. He has got '600 rupees in fifties' by writing a book. His portrayal resembles a saintly character. If we look back to thousands of years into the Vedic age, we see such characters. In present also, we see these characters, who never complain. They are happy when smiling faces arise around them: But I knew that Anil’s face, when he discovered the theft, would show only a touch of sadness. Not for the loss of money, but for the loss of trust.

The character of Hari is simply us, who are trying to gain something at any cost. We just take time to understand the relevance between living on alms and living on hardwork. We revert back to the good in the end, through whichever path we may follow.

'The Thief's Story' describes the social life of differentiated section of our society. The truth revolves around us, with us, and it lacks only the acceptance!
