Travelling to China from India or from other areas, were confined across the famous route known as the Silk Route or the Silk road. This involved transport of all merchandise, spices etc. The main route for this was land. People used to traverse across mountains by horses to reach to china. Caravans and other modes were also used at a later stage.

Another very important mode of transport was water which  was also popular for maritime transport. There are references about Vasco Da Gama and others. So, all the options given here were applicable as an individual or consolidated case.
