Answer:

D. 3

Explanation:

Why? It's Because 4p contains three orbitals each can contains 2 electrons with opposite spins. So, the number of electrons having -1/2 spin number is 3 (as each three orbitals will have one electron of 1/2 spin and another of -1/2 spin).

Total number of electrons that can have spin quantum number

s=-\dfrac{1}{2}   is  3.

We know ,

Orbital angular momentum quantum number (l) for 4p orbit is , l = 1 .

We know ,number of electrons that can have spin quantum number S = - 1 /2 , m_l= -l,-(l-1),...0....,(l-1),l\ .

(  It varies from - l to l ).

Total no of magnetic quantum number for 4p orbit = -1 , 0 , 1.

Also, each magnetic quantum have 2 electrons one having spin quantum number s=\dfrac{1}{2}  and other has  s=-\dfrac{1}{2} .

Therefore, total number of electrons that can have spin quantum number

s=-\dfrac{1}{2}   is  3.  ( each from every magnetic quantum number ).

Hence, this is the required solution.
