Placenta and corpus luteum secretes the same hormones, estrogen and progesterone.

  • The placenta is a structure that develops in the uterus and connects with the foetus via the umbilical cord to provide nutrients and oxygen and eliminate wastes.
  • It produces mainly two steroid hormones which are estrogen and progesterone.

Function of progesterone-

1. Maintains lining of uterus, providing the foetus a place to grow.

2. Prevents premature contraction of uterine wall.

Function of estrogen-

1. Development of mammary gland and milk production.

  • The corpus luteum is found in the ovary right after ovulation. It also secretes estrogen and progesterone. The hormones prepare the uterine wall for implantation.
