In simple words- It is the ability of a grid to automatically eliminate the faulty section from the rest of the grid, in order to reduce the downtime in the non-affected zone.
It is one of the most important aspect of a Smart Grid (lies into the feeder automation section) as it improves the reliability, power restoration time, grid performance and most importantly customer satisfaction.
This SHG is mainly a distribution level phenomenon, wherein we have a ring main grid network having RMUs, with atleast 2 isolator + 1 breaker arrangement. And with peer to peer communication between the two adjacent FRTU's (Communication can be done via GPRS or other means) installed along with the RMU panels, at the time of fault on a subsequent section, the respective isolators automatically open up and eliminate the faulty part. Hence, removing the human intervention and being called the Self- Healing Grid.
And the most amazing thing is that, the complete self-healing operation is done within a few seconds (15-30 secs, depending upon the bandwidth of communication b/w 2 adjacent FRTUs) against the conventional way where it took around 1-3 hours (sometimes more than an hour to even locate the fault).
So, we save a huge amount of time and also improve user's satisfaction.
