Selvi’s house has an overhead tank in the shape of a cylinder. This is filled by pumping water
from a sump (an underground tank) which is in the shape of a cuboid. The sump has dimensions
1.47 m × 1.44 m × 95cm. The overhead tank has its radius 56cm and height 95 cm.
i) What is the curved surface area of the cylinder ?
a) 33440 sq.cm b) 33400 sq.cm c) 34430 sq.cm d) 30440 sq.cm
ii) What is the volume of the cylindrical tank ?
a) 936440 cu.cm b) 936340 cu.cm c) 936320 cu.cm d) 946440 cu.cm
iii) Amount of water left in the sump after the over head tank is filled completely____
a) 1074640 cu.cm b) 1070400 cu.cm c) 1076460 cu.cm d) 1074440 cu.cm
iv) Height of the water in the sump after the over head tank is filled completely________

Answer:

i) a      ii) c   iii) a     iv) c

Step-by-step explanation:

For Cuboid : l = 1.47 m = 147 cm  ,  b = 1.44 cm = 144 cm , h = 95 cm

For  cylinder : r = 56 cm and h = 95 cm

i) CSA of cylinder = 2πrh = 2 x (22/7) x 56 x 95 = 44 x 8 x 95 = 33440 cm²

ii) vol of cylindrical tank = πr²h = (22/7)x 56 x 56 x 95 = 22 x 8 x 56 x 95 = 936320 cm³

iii) Amount of water left = vol of cuboid - vol of cylinder

                                       = lbh - 936320

                                       =147 x 144 x 95 - 936320

                                       =  2010960 -936320

                                       = 1074640 cm³

iv) Ht of water in sump = Vol of water left/base area

                                       = 1074640/(147 x 144)

                                       = 50.76 cm
