(x + y) {}^{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  + 2xy \\ (13) {}^{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  + 2(6 \times \frac{1}{4} ) \\ 169 = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  + 2( \frac{25}{4} ) \\ 169 = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  +  \frac{25}{2}  \\ 169 -  \frac{25}{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  \\  \frac{169 \times 2 - 25}{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}  \\  \frac{338 - 25}{2}  = x {}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}  \\  \frac{313}{2}  =  {x}^{2}  +  {y}^{2}

Now using the identity

(x - y) {}^{2}  = x {}^{2}  + y {}^{2}   - 2(xy) \\ (x - y) {}^{2}  =  \frac{313}{2}  - 2( \frac{25}{4} ) \\ (x - y) {}^{2}  =  \frac{313}{2}  -  \frac{25}{2}  \\ (x - y ){}^{2}  =  \frac{313 - 25}{2}  \\ (x - y) {}^{2}  =  \frac{288}{2}  \\ (x - y) {}^{2}  = 144 \\ x - y =  \sqrt{144}
