Arthropod eyes are called compound eyes
because they are made up of repeating
units, the ommatidia, each of which
functions as a separate visual receptor.
What is the difference between compound
eyes and simple eyes?
Why is mosaic vision with less resolution
seen in cockroaches?

Answer:

Compound eyes are made up of clusters of ommatidia, but simple eyes are made up of only one single unit of eye. Compound eyes are found in most of the arthropods, annelids and molluscs. Compound eyes can cover a wider angle compared to simple eyes. The types of simple eyes are more diversified than the compound eyes.

Cockroaches have compound eye which is made up of upto 2000 units of small eyes called as ommatidia. As a result of so many different units cockroach revives saveral images at a time and therefore it creates a mosaic vision which is with less resolution but high sensitivity.
