Hyperbole comes from a Greek word which means excess.


This is basically a figure of speech which uses extreme exaggeration in order to make a point or show emphasis and this it is the opposite of understatement.


We find examples of hyperbole in literature and also in the everyday speech.


Examples:


A) I’ve told you to clean your room a million times.


B) It was so cold, I saw polar bears wearing hats and jackets.
