Answer:
a) Adding calcium sulphate decreases the foaming capacity of hard water.
b) Mechanism of cleansing action of soaps:
- Most of the dirt is oily in nature. We know that oil does not dissolve in water.
- Soap molecules are of two differing types- one is hydrophilic (interacts with water) and the other is hydrophobic (interacts with hydrocarbons)
- Inside water, there is a unique orientation that keeps the hydrocarbon end out of water.
- Clusters of molecules in which the hydrocarbon end is in the interior of the cluster and the ionic end is at the surface of cluster. Such a formation is called a micelle.
- The oily dirt is collected in the centre of the micelle formation.
- Micelles stay in the solution and will not precipitate because of ion-ion repulsion.
- Dirt suspended in micelles is also easily rinsed away.
