Answer:

a) Adding calcium sulphate decreases the foaming capacity of hard water.

b) Mechanism of cleansing action of soaps:

  1. Most of the dirt is oily in nature. We know that oil does not dissolve in water.
  2. Soap molecules are of two differing types- one is hydrophilic (interacts with water) and the other is hydrophobic (interacts with hydrocarbons)
  3. Inside water, there is a unique orientation that keeps the hydrocarbon end out of water.
  4. Clusters of molecules in which the hydrocarbon end is in the interior of the cluster and the ionic end is at the surface of cluster. Such a formation is called a micelle.
  5. The oily dirt is collected in the centre of the micelle formation.
  6. Micelles stay in the solution and will not precipitate because of ion-ion repulsion.
  7. Dirt suspended in micelles is also easily rinsed away.
