We know that ammonium chloride changes directly from solid to gaseous state on heating. So, in order to separate a mixture containing a sublimable volatile component from a non-sublimable impurity (salt in this case), the sublimation process is used.  

Sublimation is a process in which matter undergoes a phase transition directly from a solid to gaseous form, or vapor, without passing through the more common liquid phase between the two.
