In the rearing of silk,the silk worms are boiled in hot water to kill the larvae that are present in the cocoons. If they are not boiled and killed,the larvae come out of the cocoons by tearing the cocoons which is made up of silk thread and fly away. And we may not get a continuous silk thread if the silk worms tear it and fly away.

This process is called Stifling.

The reason that animal activists are raising a concern is that - the larvae are boiled alive in hot water for silk.

This process is a common thing in sericulture industry. There is still no other way to produce continuous silk threads rather than stifling.
