Server rooms often have halogen systems for extinguishing fires. An accidental discharge of the halogen could have disastrous results. Describe the effects of halogen systems on equipment and personnel. Should this possibility be included in the DR plan? What recommendations would you make for this scenario?

Halons or Halogenated hydrocarbons that are considered to possess very good fire extinguishing properties. Halons are preserved as a vapor and so they can extinguish fire quickly.

Although the halons possess little cooling properties and so they might re-ignite any leftover unburned fuel. Also, they are rapidly dispersed by wind and it is possible that they may penetrate the fire in small quantities. Although Halons are clean and non-damaging, they may sometimes adversely affect few metals like aluminum etc and cause degrading effects. Also, they contain ozone-depleting materials. So, Halons are no more included in DR plan.

A CO₂ extinguishing system, which is a non-conducting, gaseous extinguishing agent is the most preferred type of fire extinguishing method used nowadays.
