Answer:

Cornea

Explanation:

  • The cornea of the eye is the transparent front part that covers the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber. Together with the anterior chamber and lens, the cornea refracts light and accounts for approximately two-thirds of the total refractive power of the eye. In humans, the refractive power of the cornea is considered to be 43 diopters. The cornea can be reshaped with surgery such as LASIK.  The cornea provides most of the eye's focusing power, but its focus is fixed. Accommodation is achieved by changing the geometry of the lens. The unmyelinated nerve endings of cornea are sensitive to touch, chemicals, and temperature.
  • Touching the cornea triggers an involuntary reflex that causes the eyelids to close. Since transparency is paramount, a healthy cornea does not have or need blood vessels inside. Instead, oxygen dissolves in tears and diffuses through the cornea, keeping it healthy.
