Solution :

Let the number of pencils he had be x .

A/Q ,

80 - thrice the number of pencils = 8 .

80 - 3x = 8

80 - 8 = 3x

72 = 3x

Hence the equation can be : 3x = 72

Solving the variable :

3x = 72

x = \dfrac{72}{3}

x = 24

Hence , the number of pencils Ravi had was 24 .
