An experiment to demonstrate osmosis:

  • In this experiment we will take a deshelled eggs, 3 glasses, sugar, salt and pure water.
  • Take the glasses and pour water in it.
  • In one glass dissolve sugar and steer it well.
  • In another glass take salt and steer it well.
  • Therefore we have one glass of pure water, one glass of sugar solution and one glass of salt solution.
  • Now put eggs inside the glasses one by one.
  • Wait for 6-7 hours for the process to take place.
  • We can see that there is no change in the egg kept in the pure water.
  • The egg kept in sugar solution shrinks and the egg kept in salt solution gets larger.

EXPLANATION:

The osmosis process led to the movement of water from high concentration to low concentration of solvent. It is done through a semi permeable membrane.
