Indirect/Reported Speech refers to a dialogue being told to a third person/reporting what happened to a third person.

Example: Loren said,"I bought a new dress." (Direct)

Loren said that she bought a new dress. (Indirect)

In the above example, when writing in indirect/reported form, the sentence changes according to its tense. Also, modifications regarding certain words like 'this' changes to 'that', 'tomorrow' changes to 'the next day', 'will' changes to 'would', 'can' changes to 'could' and many other words have to be made. Also, if the sentence contains an interrogation, then 'said' changes to 'asked'. Punctuation marks other than a full stop (.) cannot be used in indirect/reported speech.

Seeta said to Mohan,"I am helpless." (Direct)

Seeta told Mohan that she was helpless. (Indirect)

Direct speech: Seeta said to Mohan, "I am helpless."

Indirect speech: Seeta told Mohan that she was helpless.

Indirect/Reported speech is the form of narration in which the words of the speaker are told to someone else (third person) indirectly.

→When writing in indirect form, 'this' changes to 'that', 'can' changes to 'could', 'will' changes to 'would', etc.

For example:

Direct: He said, "I am going."

Indirect: He said that he was going.
