- Setting in the story "My Hometown" by Yasmin Aquiza is a five-star hotel that has risen on the very spot where the narrator's house in Davao City used to be. She grew up in that place, having spent the first eighteen years of her life there. Since she left, she has travelled and lived in several places, but she has been back almost every year.
- There was a tinge of irony in how her roots and peripatetic manners seem to be reflected in the fact that the hotel was named after Marco Polo, one of the most well-known visitors in history. She was happy with some of the old landmarks that were still there, despite the access to numerous shopping malls.
