This beautiful poem by Maya Angelou describes the agony of the people who are racially discriminated. the caged bird symbolises the people who are deprived of their freedom while the free bird is a metaphor for the people who have full liberty and are free. The poetess herself being a black poetess knows the pains of the people who are discriminated on the basis of colour, region, race, etc. The poetess gives the message that the depressed people will not remain quiet but like her they will voice their views and will fight for their liberty.
