Yes this is an ironical situation, as she never wanted Duke and rarely appreciated his presence in her house. She instead wanted a pomeranian in place of Duke.
But when she saw Duke as a great help in curing her husband she started admiring the dog. When Duke met with an accident, she showed her great feelings of respect and care towards the dog and understood his importance in her and her husband's life
