SF6 exist not OF6. Why?​

Explanation:

MAINLY 2 REASONS

1.Oxygen does not have an orbital hence it cannot expand its octet. That is why it cannot show a +6 oxidation state. But sulphur has d - orbital and it can expand its octet.

2.Electronegativity. ... Oxygen and fluorine have almost the same electronegativity, so oxygen isn't able to donate enough electron density to fluorine to form OF6.

  • It is because Sulphur has larger size which can accommodate upto 6 F than that Oxygen. Sulphur has also vacant d orbital, which Oxygen doesn't have. Thus, SF6 exist and OF6 doesn't.
