इसका शाब्दिक अर्थ होता है छोटा रूप। अथार्त जब दो या दो से अधिक शब्दों से मिलकर जो नया और छोटा शब्द बनता है उस शब्द को समास कहते हैं। दूसरे शब्दों में कहा जाए तो जहाँ पर कम- से- कम शब्दों में अधिक से अधिक अर्थ को प्रकट किया जाए वह समास कहलाता है।
