Shadows and angles from a satellite image can often be measured to calculate the height of the object.
These are the data used for this technique: The off-nadir angle of the spacecraft at the time of capturing, the azimuth of the sun and its angle from the horizon and latitude, longitude coordinates of the object’s position at the time of capturing the image and a basic trigonometry.
This technique is in use for mapping the mountains and peaks of the other planets. This technique was once implemented by American Special Ops in the finding and killing of Osama Bin ladin.
