There were many important leaders in the Mughal Empire, but the most notable are Akbar and Shah Jahan. Akbar was the third emperor of the Mughal empire and is attributed with leading one of the Mughal golden ages. Akbar was Muslim, like all of the other Mughal rulers, but he was extremely tolerant of other religions, mainly Hinduism. He believed that tolerance and diplomacy were the keys to ruling an empire well. He did things such as remove the non-muslim tax, stopped conversion of slaves, and created a centralized government through diplomacy and marriage. While he found tolerance and diplomacy important, he was also a strong military general and expanded the borders of the Mughal Empire significantly. The other notable rule of the Mughals was Shah Jahan. While Shah Jahan was not as tolerant of Hindus, he was an ambitious ruler with a strong government. He was also renowned for his patronage of the arts, such as the Taj Mahal. Also, many have found him ruthless, but he did expand the size of the Mughal Empire to its largest ever during his reign. Both Akbar and Shah Jahan were focused on strong government, as well as imperial expansion. While the two leaders may have had different opinions and beliefs, they shared many virtues, which made them strong rulers.
