Shahu Maharaj was the ruler of Kolhapur, who tried to uplift the backward classes and took some important steps for their betterment.

He was the first person to introduce the reservation of 50% quota for the employment of the lower castes in his state in 1902, so that they could find suitable jobs easily.

He undertook this reservation for protecting the causes of the weaker sections of the society and he encouraged the people from backward classes who were successful in receiving higher education.
