Answer:  Merchant of Venice is a heroine oriented play though the title suggests otherwise. There are mainly two female characters in the play - Portia a rich heiress and Nerissa her waiting maid. Jessica, Shylock’s daughter is also there but her part is rather brief.

Out of these women Portia is the one equipped with the great qualities of character that befit the heroine of the play. Let’s once look at her qualities. To begin with she is sensitive towards her father’s wishes. Though she knows how difficult it is to find a match for her on the conditions put by her father. She treats the Prince of Morocco and the prince of Arragon with utmost civility though she dislikes them. She is beautiful, charming and extraordinarily intelligent. She has the courage to stand for what is right and considers it her duty to save Antonio’s life when he loses all his riches and forfeits the bond. She quickly swings into action. Portia and Nerissa arrive at the court disguised as a lawyer and a clerk .

In the court of justice Portia rises to great heights. We see Shylock who has everything going for him. He is elated that finally the moment to take his revenge on Antonio has come. And all the odds are stacked against Antonio who has resigned to his fate. She first pleads Shylock for mercy. When Portia’s expatiates on the virtue of mercy she delivers one of the most eloquent and powerful exposition in literature. The quality of mercy (Shakespeare quote) - Wikipedia She tries to persuade Shylock to show mercy and explains how mercy is a higher virtue than justice.

When Shylock does not budge she cleverly serves him justice, plain and cold justice. She turns the tables on him saying that according to the bond he can cut off the pound of flesh from Antonio’s body ‘nearest his heart’, exactly one pound, nothing more or less, nor should he shed a drop of blood in the process. In one moment Shylock who was set to win turns into a loser. Thus she defeats Shylock with sheer logic.

Then, there’s a lighter side to Portia. Portia who loves teasing Bassanio and his friend Gratiano who had married Nerissa. When in disguise they take their wedding rings from their husbands and later when they are back home demand their rings and accuse them of cheating.

These endearing qualities of Portia make her the heroine of this play not the length of the role nor that she is the lady love of the hero of the play which she is not. Antonio not Bassanio is the Merchant of Venice.
